Automated External Defibrillators
A 4 hour course aimed at introducing a systematic method of using a defibrillator in first aid. This mixes practical learning with scenarios of real situations.
NB All who attend this course must hold a valid HSE First Aid at Work certificate
AED's have been used successfully in the community by lay First Responders, including police officers, fire-fighters, security staff, airline cabin crew and members of first aid and rescue organisations. The Resuscitation Council (UK) recommends that AED's be made available wherever large crowds gather, for example at sports stadiums, pop concerts, theatres, cinemas and shopping complexes.
Course content:
- CPR – A refresh of the skills learnt on the HSE FAW Course
- Heart Attacks – Statistics, fact and treatment of heart attacks
- Getting to know the AED (any type) – Know the layout, learn how defibrillation works
- Operating the AED – Learn a safe system of how to operate the AED safely
The use of Oxygen in Resuscitation
You may bolt on to the AED or HSE FAW course, the use of oxygen in Resuscitation.
The module would include
- Basic Airway Maintenance – including hand held suction and airway adjuncts
- Oxygen Equipment – storage, safety and maintenance of all equipment
- Ventilating a patient – the use of a bag valve and mask for assisted ventilation of a patient
